Cat Maxi Dress – McCalls 6700

This is actually a dress I made over a year ago but it was way too big so I could never wear it … until pregnancy.

I love a good maxi dress, who doesn’t? They are so comfortable and breezy – perfect for summer. I really liked the design of this dress, super simple yet fashionable. The back has a nice tie string on the neckline and the shoulders also have ties. The bodice is a mock wrap and it’s an easy pull over dress.

Since this was so long ago I am not sure what my measurements were at the time of sewing but I am pretty sure I made a size 12. The issue I had with the end product is that I wasn’t really thinking and used a 4 way stretch swimsuit fabric! I hadn’t really worked with knits too much at this point and I figured it would be fine. Once the dress was finished it was HUGE and I was swimming in it – good thing it was swimsuit fabric, huh?! Haha, lame joke attempt. Anyways, I put it aside and figured when I’m 8 months pregnant it would work out well!

So fast forward and here I am 6 months pregnant and the dress finally fit. I love how drapey and comfortable this dress is! I wore it while we were in Mexico and it was perfect. If you’ve never been to Mexico it gets REALLY hot but I had no issues with the dress at all. Too bad it’s cold now or else I’d still be wearing this back in Ohio.

The dress itself was simple to make and only took a couple of hours from cutting to finishing. I would say this is a good dress for a beginner. The waist is elastic and so are the shoulder seams. The knit fabric gives a lot of room for error in sizing and also just comfort.

I’ll probably make this again in the summer but with a regular knit instead of swimsuit! I love the crazy cougar design on the fabric too. Now I get to focus on making baby stuff and winter gear – Oh how I miss summer and Mexico!
