Simplicity 1481 – Car Seat Cover (Hack)

Simplicity 1481 – Car Seat Cover (Hack)

Wow – two posts in two days! Don’t get used to it 😉

I picked up Simplicity 1481 while JoAnn Fabric was having one of their $1 pattern sales. The pattern has a few great basics: diaper covers, neck roll, stroller cover, blanket, car seat tent, & twin shopping car cover.

In addition to using the car seat cover pattern I also followed this tutorial from Sew Dang Cute Crafts: Peek-a-Boo Car Seat Canopy by Wannabe Crafty. I really liked the idea of having the peek-a-boo flap to check on baby without having to lift the whole cover and maybe wake him up. Check out her tutorial – it’s really great and simple! Also, you don’t really need to have the Simplicity pattern – it just made cutting the corners round a bit easier and even.

I choose a black and white chevron pattern from JoAnn’s. I would link to it but I can’t find it on their website anymore. It’s called “Soft N Comfy Fabric” and is the same as a super soft Minky. For the back I just used basic Kona black quilter’s cotton. Lining up the chevrons took a lot of work but totally worth it in the end – I love the finished product! I will warn you though, you need either a walking foot or a teflon foot to help guide the fabric through smoothly. I have neither currently, but just ordered both feet for future projects. There are a couple spots where the minky is bunched up but overall you can’t really tell unless I point it out.

As you may notice I decided to do a skull applique on the little flap. I’m very new to any kind of applique or embroidery but I’m trying to learn as much as I can. I found this awesome FREE skull applique from GG Designs Embroidery on Pinterest. I highly recommend checking out the website and I love this skull – very easy and comes out looking bad ass!

I’m really excited about this car seat cover! It’s so simple to make and only takes a couple of hours, if that. These would make great baby shower gifts too. Baby gets to stay warm, safe from wind and unbothered from strangers. The flap really helps for checking on baby or getting some fresh air.

Since I had coupons the whole project cost me about $20 and I have lots of leftover fabric since I tend to over buy. I could actually make another one with what I have left. So all-in-all this was a good deal and cheaper than buying a cover.

P.S. Sorry about the quality of the pictures – I used my iPhone this time around because I was trying to hurry up and show off the cover!

  1. Im newer to sewing. Just got this pattern for my new grandbaby. I dont get binding?? You are supposed to cut one and it doesnt look like it will fit??

    1. Hi! Welcome to sewing 🙂 I didn’t use binding on mine but what I would suggest is buying the premade binding, not cutting it and sewing it onto the cover, then at the end cut off 2″ overlap, fold it in and then overlap the beginning part. I hope that makes sense and good luck!
