Megan Nielsen – Ruched Maternity Skirt (MN1008)

I actually made this skirt back in September. The pattern is from Megan Nielsen and is called the Ruched Maternity Skirt – MN1008. She also has a few other maternity patterns that you should check out if you are pregnant.

The pattern is $12.00 and a downloadable pdf. Here is the description:

Designed to grow with your growing belly, this incredibly comfortable and flattering ruched maternity skirt is the perfect maternity basic. The ruched sides mean that it will fit and flatter your baby bump (no matter the stage of your pregnancy), and the high waistline will give you full stomach coverage and show off your gorgeous baby bump silhouette!

Able to be styled casually or formally, this pattern will see you through all events and all stages of pregnancy.

Comes with three included variations: above the knee, below the knee (midi length), and a ruffle hemline.

You are supposed to choose the size you were before pregnancy or early 2nd trimester size. I choose what I was in early pregnancy, which was 34-29 1/2-39. This ended up being a Medium. I think before pregnancy I was about the same, 34-29-38. These pictures were taken 2 weeks ago and I was 39-44 1/2-42 1/2, so the skirt obviously grows with you! To make it easier, I was 38 weeks and 5 days in the photos. I’m currently 40 weeks 4 days and the skirt still fits.

The pattern calls for a jersey knit with at least 40% stretch. My husband picked out the fabric at JoAnn’s with me. The fabric is called Fashion Knits – Fukuro Geo Knit Black White Fabric. It is 58% Cotton, 40% Polyester, 2% Spandex. It’s super easy to sew with and has a fun, funky design. The weight is a little heavier than average jersey knit.

Since my fabric was 60″ wide I only needed a yard. Most knit fabrics are 60″ wide, so this pattern is not only quick to make but also pretty cheap. I’ve since combined this pattern with Simplicity 1426 to make three pin-up maternity dresses. You can check out one of them here: Maternity Dress. I plan on posting the other two very soon. For all 3 of those dresses I used stretch sateen and made a size X-Large since the fabric isn’t 40% stretch. The dresses all fit 2 weeks ago, they were tight but still fit and looked flattering!

I love how this pattern shows off your baby bump so well. I think pregnancy is beautiful and it shouldn’t be hidden under loose clothing. I know my fabric is a bit busy, so it may hide things a bit but overall I like it. The skirt is super comfortable and just the right length to feel pretty but also modest.

Overall, I highly recommend this pattern. Megan did a fantastic job it. You can buy, download, tape together, cut out fabric, sew and have a finished garment in just a couple of hours. It’s crazy simple and turns out very flattering.

Now everyone cross your fingers that this baby boy wants to come out soon! I’ve been patient but now that I’m past my due date I am going crazy! Maybe he will be a Christmas baby? He is officially being evicted on December 30th – that’s my induction date.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

  1. Such a gorgeous pattern on you – you really do pregnancy so well! I hope you’re enjoying the last few days/weeks as much as you can 🙂 I couldn’t agree more about showing it off, ‘baby-con’ all the way!

    1. Thank you! I believe you should show off your pregnant belly, not hide it! I’m so excited about him and want to show it off 🙂
