AMY’S KITSCHY WRAP DRESS
Once again I choose a pattern based upon nursing. All of my clothing needs to have easy access for a starving, screaming baby. I figured a wrap dress would be perfect and it doesn’t scream “NURSING DRESS!”. This is McCalls 6959 – Wrap Dress.(Side note: sorry about the lighting in the pictures)
I sewed up View A size 14. When I started this my measurements were 37-31-40. On the back I should have went with a size 16 (38-31-40) but McCalls seems to have a lot of wearing ease and is always too big. I think I picked the perfect size because I love how it fits. Also, since it’s a wrap dress you have some wiggle room if the dress is too tight.
One warning, beware of one-way designed fabric. As you can tell on mine the design isn’t going vertical on the skirt. I think in the end it still looks pretty awesome. I love the design on this fabric, it’s so fun and eye catching. Also, I did run out of bias tape. I swear I ordered enough, I think. So double check that and have some extra on hand.
Another great thing about this pattern is that you don’t have to worry about gusts of wind blowing your skirt open. This is a very common issue with most wrap dresses. I don’t want to have to wear a pair of shorts underneath my dress!
Something that the pattern doesn’t have but really needs – POCKETS! I swear, every single dress should come with them. I should have added some but honestly I forgot. When you have a baby going nuts next to you in an exersaucer you tend to forget things! (Don’t worry, he’s not always in the exersaucer, just happens he loves that thing while I sew – and if that’s how he stays happy for awhile, we got with it!)
Overall, great pattern and dress. I would recommend it if you like wrap dresses.
Such a cute dress! I love the contrast bias. I also reeallly hate the ridiculous wearing ease in some patterns – I swear no one, not even the designers go by them anyway!
Thank you! Isn’t it crazy how much ease they put in?!?!
I love this so much!!!
Thank you!
The dress looks great, and you look great post-baby! I have this pattern in my stash too. I have to ask, what size did you end up using? Did I miss that in your post, lol. Fantastic fabric for a dress too.
How did I not see this comment?! I just updated my post – I used a size 14. 🙂
Great job on this dress! I’m doing a sew-along of this dress on my blog right now so thanks for the inspo 🙂
You shortened the dress, right? I was thinking about doing the same, so it’s great to see it looks AMAZING with it sitting a bit higher above the knee. I’m a nursing mama too, so it’s good to know you’ve been able to use it for that purpose!
Hey! It is a comfy and easy to make dress 🙂 I didn’t shorten it, I just am really tall! I’m a little over 5’10”, so everything is short on me. It’s not the easiest to nurse in while in public. I’ve really only nursed while at home in it. But mine is also higher up on my chest than on the model. So maybe yours will turn out the same?
Hey there! Can I ask what sort of fabric you used? Well, if there is any give to it or is it more like a quilting cotton that has no stretch at all? I just got this pattern…dying to give it a go 🙂 Looks awesome on you !!
Hey! I used 100% quilting cotton, no stretch or give. Thank you 🙂 Hopefully you like it, I lost mine haha… so I can’t wear it
