For December’s Minerva Crafts Blogger Network project I made the Grainline Studio – Morris Blazer. This is only the second time I’ve made anything by Grainline Studio, if you remember the first thing I made were the Maritime Shorts and I really loved those.
My measurements at the time of starting this were 37-32-40. I went with a size 8 and 1/4″ seam allowance (the pattern calls for 1/2″). According to the pattern I should have been a 10 in the bust and between a 12 and 14 for the waist. I like my jackets to be tight fitted and since this was stretch I decided to size down. The finished measurements of the size 8 seemed to be closest to what I wanted.
With all the measurements in mind, I should have used the 1/2″ seam allowance and I did take in the sides a little over an inch. I took in the sides after I was finished with the whole garment, so they are taken in right under the sleeve and right above the hem. I really like this fit better, before it was hanging all wonky and made me look sloppy.
I used a great ponte knit from Minerva. I honestly adore a good ponte, it’s a great fabric that feels expensive and hangs beautifully. I choose emerald green and black. I originally wanted to make the collar black but honestly forgot until after I cut the pattern and ironed on the interfacing. Oh well, I think it still looks good! I did add a pop of the green into the sleeve facings.
The directions are simple. I did get a little caught up on adding the hem facings but I think it’s because I didn’t read through it fully. I also had researched this pattern and other people said they got hung up on that part, so I already had it in my mind that I’d get confused. If you just read through it, it’s really simple. I read through that step and the next one and then looked at the pictures. When you get there, just remember you attach the facings together and to the bottom corners of each other.
On a side note, I apologize for the quality of the pictures. I really tried to get some clear, good, uncluttered pictures and go figure they turned out blurry and you can’t see the detail that well. I’m going to keep trying to learn lighting and one day I WILL have good pictures for you guys!
Overall I do like the pattern. I think next time I’ll make the sleeves longer instead of bracelet length. I honestly don’t ever wear too much jewelry because there is a little baby who likes to play with it. And by play with it, I mean break it. He doesn’t know any better though, so I cut him some slack. It’s a good thing he’s cute 😉 Unfortunately he’s not in the pictures – he’s napping.
I really like the way this came out, job well done!
I really love this Amy Lura…you did a great job….love the colors …love u
Really cool color combinations Amy. This is the best Morris I’ve seen. I agree on the longer sleeves, I can’t stand wearing bracelet length myself.
I love the colorblocking! This is perfect for colder weather. I have found that my best photos are taken with natural light. I know it’s hard to do that in the winter in cold weather states lol. But outside pics are the best. Otherwise I stand in a well lit room of my house – not direct sunlight, just well lit with outside light. 🙂
