#maxisewalong2017 – Named Patterns – Delphi Maxi Dress

It’s finally here – time for me to reveal my maxi dress for the #maxisewalong2017! I already told you which pattern I would be using: Named Patterns – Delphi Maxi Dress and I’ve shown you the fabric I choose. So now it’s time for the final product!

Let’s get down to the details. At the time of making this my measurements were 36-31-40, which puts me at around 8-10-8 sizing. I decided to size down and make a straight 6 (EUR 38). I looked at the finished measurements and this seemed a bit closer to what I wanted. I like tight dresses when I’m using a knit. I also read a review stating that the top as 1″ ease and I prefer 0 or negative in my knit tops.

I’ve never made anything from Named Patterns before and have always wanted to give them a try. I’m all about supporting indie/local businesses. I bought the print at home PDF and was happy to see that the print out is layered and pieces overlap each other. I always trace my patterns, so this ended up saving time for me in the whole taping it together process. The pattern also has 2 sizes per file, which is great but when I was going to grade sizes, this was a bummer because the sizes were on 2 different files. I think in the future I will size down to a 4 on the top, you can see it’s a little large.

The waistband casing seemed to be confusing at first but if you just read through it, then follow directions (make sure to make your markings!!) you should do just fine. I didn’t use a stretch stitch but instead used zig zag. For the elastic I used 26″ (keep in mine my waist is 31″) and it fits comfortably. I do want to stress that I did NOT use clear elastic, I didn’t have any in the house and if so 26″ would have been way too small. I just used the regular 1/4″ knit elastic.

My only complaint would be the straps and the sizing. This part was crazy confusing to me. I wish there was a size chart about how much to really use. They give you an idea but that was not working for me. I just winged it. In the end it looks good and fits well. I did pin down the straps and then tried it on, changed lengths, pinned again, tried it on again, repeat. I also used knit interfacing because my fabric is very thin and way too stretchy. Besides the top being a tad bit big, I think the straps and bias turned out looking good.

I also added 1″ to the length but think I will add another inch when I make this again. One thing I forgot to add was POCKETS!!! This pattern has no pockets but you could easily add them into the side seams. I don’t know what my deal is with forgetting that pockets are a MUST HAVE in my life!!!

Overall – great pattern but might be a little tricky for beginners. It does stay 3 scissors (Average) on the pattern. I will be making this one again. If I had time I would have went ahead and made it in the silky black jersey knit from JoAnn that I mentioned before. Maybe next time! I get such little sewing time lately with taking care of the toddler and dog (yes – he’s still trying to stick around!! Thank God!!) and trying to be a decent wife that I get super picky with my projects.

Just in case you ever wanted to see the unedited… here you go – always with a baby in the frame 😀

  2. Hi Amy. In light of the ease do you think this would work in woven if you found a solution for the straps? Maybe ties that tie through the binding loop at the back? Thanks

    1. If you did a woven you would need to add a zipper probably and take in the sides a little bit. I would for sure make a muslin! Let me know how it goes!
