Once again I’m apologizing for not posting as much as I’d like! I’ve made 3 different things though, so at least I’ve been busy! I have tomorrow off work (it’s my birthday!!) and need to figure out what to make next. I want to make a fun summer dress inspired by Uli Herzner from Project Runway – Season 3. Oh yeah, in my spare time I’ve been catching up on Project Runway … There are a lot of seasons I haven’t seen yet – so don’t spoil it for me 😉
Anyways, back to Butterick B5181 – Maxi Dress. I LOVE THIS! It’s a super simple pattern and it turned out really cute. I used a fun black and white tribal 100% rayon fabric. The only part I didn’t like was all the gathering at the waist. The pattern has the various sizes for the bodice but the skirt part is one size fits all and this doesn’t look as good as I wanted it to. Next time I’ll make the waist a bit more slender.
The directions are easy to follow but I would recommend making a muslin first, I had to keep sizing down to get the bodice to fit correctly. I started out with a 10 and ended up making a 6 by the end of it!
Here are a few pictures of the muslin, I’m thinking of trying to ombre it with this teal dye I bought. I’ve never dyed anything before so I keep putting it off, I don’t want to ruin anything!
I like sunshine!
I’ll be making this pattern again and again 🙂
Last picture, driving my new baby and rocking the maxi dress and my Kollabora sunglasses:
Amy Lura Happy Birthday..and I love the dresses you have made…they LQQK so good on you…oh and yes..love the car…you go girl 🙂 love you…mom
thank you mom!! i love you <3
Great dress! I’d like to see that muslin ombre dyed with teal – I think that’d be very pretty and would work really well with your hair colour as well. 🙂
Have a lovely birthday!
thank you 😀 i am going to give it a try, i figure if it doesn’t ombre well enough i can just dye all of it teal.
Gorgeous! I love the print too. I need to get started on a maxi. I know what you mean about gathering at the waist though, the less bulk there the better. Doesn’t seem to matter for you though 🙂
Haha! Thanks! It does make everything look a bit fuller… LOL
I love this! I’m such a sucker for maxi dresses, and this one is perfect! You look great in it!
Thanks so much! I highly recommend making it 🙂
Wow, cool car. Is that is birthday present?! The dress looks great. I like the black and white. Yes, I think you should have a go with the ombre dye. It’s a bit messy, but good fun and even better if you can find something else to dye while you’re at it. Have fun 🙂
Thank you! I was thinking about waiting until I have a few things to dye.. that way I won’t waste any of the dye!
Ok so I hate sewing! I know that is probably illegal to say on this site, but you actually make me want to learn even tho my fingers cross just thinking about it! Love the dresses! OMG wow Amy!
Sewing is so much fun and so relaxing – maybe you should give it another try!! It’s great to be able to make your own clothes.
Beautiful dress. May I ask, what fabric did you use for the muslin? Thank you.
Thank you very much! I used Roc-Lon Unbleached Nature’s Way Muslin (http://www.joann.com/roc-lon-unbleached-nature-s-way-muslin-50-yd-bolt/zprd_10548782a/) – I caught it on sale and got it for $89 for a whole bolt! I really like it, I haven’t tried dying it yet but other reviews say it’s dyes pretty well. Hope that helps!
