Six months ago today was my very first blog post on That’s Sew Amy! Crazy how six months can fly by so quickly but I’m proud of myself for keeping up with the blog. When you’re busy sewing and have 101 garments you want to make there isn’t much time to take pictures, edit them (so I don’t look crazy) and write up a descriptive post about your adventure. But I’m doing my best!
I’ve also met a great community of other sewing addicts and some great sewing bloggers! Thank you to everyone for being so welcoming, encouraging, and helpful. I’ve learned so very much from these other sewist and they have helped me to better my skill set. I’m excited to keep on showing the world my hobby and creativity.
Thank you to my friends and family for supporting my blog and fashion creations :). The biggest thanks goes to my husband, Andres <3 For the past year I have been running off and sewing for hours on end. I honestly believe I have the best husband in the whole wide world! Thanks for putting up with me honey! In my professional career I'm a Computer Programmer - kinda different from sewing ๐ I've been sewing for a long time but it was always off and on. I'm really happy I got back into it. I feel as though I can let myself be creative and I love the feeling of fulfillment I get when I complete a garment. Being able to post it on here and have feedback has helped me come out of my shell and given me confidence - so thank you! I decided to give away a present: Gertie’s New Book For Better Sewing. I really enjoy Gertie’s vintage style and techniques. I’ve already made a couple patterns from her book: The Portrait Blouse and 2 versions of The Pencil Skirt. I’m also working on another pattern from the book that I hope to have finished up in the next week or two – so keep an eye out for it.
This book comes with 10 FREE patterns!
Description of the book from Amazon:
Gretchen โGertieโ Hirsch is a passionate home seamstress, a sought-after sewing teacher, and the creator of one of the webโs most popular sewing blogs: Gertieโs New Blog for Better Sewing. The blog began as a way for readers to follow Hirschโs progress as she stitched all 14 fashions from the iconic 1950s sewing book Vogueโs New Book for Better Sewing (a Julie & Juliaโesque experiment for the modern sewist). It quickly became a place for Hirsch to share tutorials and lively posts about sewing as it relates to fashion history, pop culture, body image, and gender. An extension of the blog, Gertieโs New Book for Better Sewing is a hardworking reference title packed with lessons on couture techniques and customization, as well as an inimitable pattern collection featuring 25 wardrobe essentials and variations inspired by vintage fashion and Gertieโs spirited, modern style.

I’m not sure. I can’t sew so they all seem exciting. If i had to pick, though, I think maybe the pencil skirt.
The Pencil Skirt is the best one to start out with – very simple and I swear it’s flattering for ANYONE!
I didn’t know if I was supposed to comment here or in the rafflecopter. So I did both!
Definately the pencil skirt!
Oh I’m easy – comment anywhere you want ๐ LOL The Pencil Skirt is the simplest and so far my favorite! Great choice!
I started sewing a year ago anf only thing that is available in my country is Burda on German, which is not my favourite language hehe so I would love to try some other book with patterns. That would be amazing :)))
What country are you in? I haven’t tried a Burda pattern yet but I will be really soon. That sucks they don’t have more options for you :/
I am new to sewing and I would LOVE to win this book. I would love to make “The Bow-Tied Blouse”, I already follow you on bloglovin, facebook and Pinterest!
Louise
I’m glad you found me all over ๐ I think The Bow-Tied Blouse is so super adorable!
Any of them! Pretty excited about the pencil skirt though. I love figure hugging clothes (in a non trashy way that is haha), so feminine!
LOL That’s what is great about vintage and pin up stuff – it is SUPER flattery and doesn’t have to look trashy!
I don’t know what I’d make first. Probably a top.
The Portrait Blouse and The Pencil Skirt are the easiest I believe ๐ And both are great looking on!
Hi Amy, just found your blog and not sure where I saw it mentioned. Duh!! Love everything so far. I need a pencil skirt so guess that would be the one to start with.
I’m glad you found me! Thanks so much ๐
I would be most interested in making the Portrait blouse. Loved your shirt re0-fashion into one. Very excited to have a chance to win this book, have seen it all over, but do not own it!
p.s., I already follow you on bloglovin’, so you won’t see me as a ‘new’ follower.
Yay that you already follow me! ๐ And good luck on winning!
I’d love to make the sultry sheath.
Oh good pick! I haven’t made it yet but it is on my to-do list!
finger crossed I win and get to try them all! Have had my eye on this book for a while. Particularly like the pencil skirt. Funky Blog, love it, S x
Thanks so much! If you win you better submit a picture of what you’ve made so I can post ๐
I would love to have the book. I am more interested to know the basics of sewing like the proper measurement first and then how to make the pattern then the techniques of sewing. Thanks a lot.
This book does give great advice and how to alter patterns for different postures, body types, etc. It’s a great read!
I love your blog! My mother knows how to sew and my friend has been studying sewing. My mom has an old Singer sewing machine, while my friend has a portable Brother. (Sewing machines have interesting names, don’t they? I’ll probably get myself a Dance or a Sister. Joke! ๐ )
I want to learn how to sew and buy my own sewing machine as well. I want to try Gertie’s pencil skirt pattern because I haven’t worn a pencil skirt in decades!
They do have really funny names ๐ Who knows where they came up with them LOL You should have your mother help teach you – it’s really fun and super rewarding!
Thanks for commenting my comment over at the sewing lab blog ๐
Happy Anniversary!! Well done!
You’re welcome! Hey, if you can get it for free now that’s even better ๐ Thanks for checking out my site!
I’d like to try the pencil skirt ๐
great choice ๐
I think I’d like to try the portrait blouse. Looks like it could be a good wardrobe staple. Thanks for offering Gertie’s book for a giveaway.
It’s a great wardrobe builder! Thanks and you’re welcome ๐
Maybe the pencil skirt, I’m not a sewing professional ๐
Maybe you will be after this! ๐
