Like I said in my last post, everyone I know is having a baby, so get ready for a few more baby garment posts 😉
This is McCall’s M4236 pattern. Description: Infants’ Buntings, Jumpsuits, Hats and Blanket: Loose-fitting bunting or jumpsuit has front zipper closure; view A and D have long sleeves with mittens; view B and C are sleeveless; view D and E have snap crotch; view E has stitched hems; hat has turn-back cuff; blanket has purchased binding.
I made view A with a super adorable stretch knit from JoAnn Fabric. This sleeper is for my best friend Sherry and her soon-to-be-here little girl. Sherry isn’t crazy about lots of pink, so I decided to go with a nice pale yellow. Plus I am in love with this print and want my out sleeper made out of it… I am a sucker for baby animals!
This was my first try with any kind of stretchy knit. Overall it was pretty simple to work with once I got the hang of it. I made sure I had a knit needle in the sewing machine and I fussed around with tension settings on my serger. The instructions are very easy and I had no problems with the mittens (I was kind of worried I’d screw them up!)
I didn’t make the little hat or the blanket. I really have no good reason why besides the fact I was being lazy I guess. Although, in my defense it was during the time I was making 101 baby outfits with very limited time!
The hardest part was the zipper. I tried and tried to get it to lay flat but I was having a hell of a time! I sewed it and unpicked it about 3 times before I figured it was good enough… I had enough! But overall it’s not bad at all. Most people wouldn’t even notice but I’m my own worst critic.
I did try my best to line up the animals on the front on each side of the zipper but it was a task! It went well until towards the bottom… oh well – still looks cute and it was my very first time! Overall I’m super pleased with the sleeper and it looks so adorable in person. When I was packing up the gift I was impressed that I had made it, it looked like something you’d buy at the store 🙂 I felt really proud of myself.
When Sherry opened it at her shower she cried a little, tears of joy, not “omg I have to pretend to like this” 😉 HAHA! I can’t wait to see this on the new baby! I’ll post pictures when she’s born and modeling it!
WOW….that is so good…like right from the store….and your tag is sooooo cool…has ur name…so when u and ur hubby have babies u can make alot of items…Amy u really are good at making things…make ME a moo!! moo!! dress…size 2 x …put ur name inside it. Love U..mom x0x0x
Thanks Mom 🙂 I really love how the outfit turned out – so cute! Then again anything would be cute with that baby animal fabric 😉 I’ll make you something one day… and for real this time haha.. not like the 4th of July scrubs that I was supposed to make 10 years ago…
That is adorable and a brilliant present as those sleeping bags are so useful but so expensive to buy. Yay!
I don’t have babies so I don’t know what is helpful and what’s not – but I figured it could get lots of use 🙂 I’d say it’s my favorite baby thing I’ve made so far!
Hi Amy,
I found you as a reviewer on Pattern Review. You really make some amazing things. While looking through your blog posts, I saw the one with the baby dress/bag.
I am looking for that yellow baby fabric. I have checked 3 Joann’s, but no luck. Also I cannot find it on the web. I was wondering if you go to your Joann’s and see it, could you let me know and I will get in touch with that Joann’s and see if I can purchase it.
I realize this is a lot to ask and I understand if this is too much trouble.
I will be looking for more of your posts at PR.

Thank you very much! I will check next time I’m there, no worries! I may not be there until Saturday but I’ll remember to look for you 🙂 And it’s no trouble, I completely understand!
Thanks. I really appreciate it.
I checked on Saturday and they don’t have that fabric anymore 🙁 I’m sorry! If I see it at any other Jo-Ann’s I’ll let you know though!
Amy, thanks so much for checking. It was such a cute pattern and nice yellow, I am not surprised it is gone.
Thanks again for checking for me.
Sherrill
It really is adorable 🙂
You’re welcome!
