AMY’S SOFT TOUCH RACER TANK
For my May project I wanted to try something new. I decided on a BurdaStyle pattern: Long Racer Back Top 03/2011 #133B. I have only made one other BurdaStyle pattern, The Perfect Bombshell Dress, which was actually a Craftsy course.
The tank top was a bit different than I expected though. It hangs down very loose and could actually double as a dress. The sides of the top are extremely low and you have to wear a cami underneath. I couldn’t really tell this from the BurdaStyle website model. I’m not upset with it, I just think this top makes my hips look bigger than they are.
The nice part is that this top is made with only 1 metre of fabric (60″ wide; 1 1/8 yard). I ended up using the fabric itself for the bias binding. I think it looks better than way, instead of a solid color.
Burda typically doesn’t have any seam allowances – so be sure to compensate for that. I don’t really find it difficult, especially with jersey because I just use my serger anyways. Also, Burda is notorious for barely having (if any) directions. With this top though, it’s simple: sew the sides together, next sew the top parts together, sew on the bias binding and then hem. You can make this tank top from start to finish in one day.
This fabric is to die for! Even if you don’t like the tank top, get the fabric – I PROMISE YOU!!! It’s so soft and feels luxurious and expensive. I love the print of it too. You can buy it here: http://www.minervacrafts.com/51.d-cotswald004-a-grey-patterned-soft-touch-stretch-jersey-designer-dress-fabric-per-metre.html
When I made this my measurements were 34-29-38 and I cut on the 38 size line. I used a 1/4″ seam on my serger. This fabric is very stretchy so it ended up working out very well. Also, since this top is huge and baggy, you can size down a bit.
The pattern itself is only $5.99. It is a pdf, so beware. I don’t really mind pdf’s – just tedious to put them together.
I don’t know why it looks lopsided in the above pictures, but I assure you that it’s even. I think this could be a great swimsuit cover up too. It would show just enough but hide parts that you don’t want everyone to see. I’ll be wearing it if summer ever gets here!
I love the fabric, and I actually love the shape of the top too. Just right for lounging in the summer. I might copy you!
Thank you! Seriously the fabric is magical!! Minerva will have my kit for sale later today, you could buy that. Or just find some other soft fabric and give it a go! I’d love to see it on someone else 🙂
I love the fabric. You know you are being an enabler, don’t you???
The tank is gorgeous. Beautiful job!
