MATRYOSHKA MARCH SKIRT
I love Matryoshka Dolls, aka Russian Nesting Dolls. My Father’s family is from Ukraine and I remember always seeing the dolls at my Grandparent’s house. So when I saw Minerva Crafts had this fabric, I pinned it and added it to my list of gotta have fabrics. Next I decided on a skirt because I figure summer will come one day, right? It has to!! (As I write this it’s sleeting and snowing out)
I choose McCalls M6570 pattern for my skirt. It also come with the shirt pattern, but I didn’t make that yet. I liked the contrast on the waistband and on the hem of the skirt.
My measurements were 28 3/4″-38″ (hmm, guess I’ve had too many desserts lately LOL) which meant I should be a size 14. My pattern only went up to 12 (that’s what I usually am…oops) so I just cut that and sewed with 1/4″ seam allowance instead. In the end it seems to have worked out just fine. I didn’t realize how high up the waistband goes, but looking at the model it’s the same way.
The skirt is a full circle skirt, which means SO MUCH HEMMING! But I do love circle skirts – so pretty. The pattern does call for tulle but I omitted it since it’s a bit fluffy and full already. I didn’t want it to be overwhelming.
I’d say my favorite part about the skirt is the tie bands. You can either tie a cute bow in the back of the skirt or the front. I prefer the back, something a bit more fancy and princessy about it.
Once again I’ll rave about the invisible zipper foot. If you don’t have one, you should really invest in one. Before I bought mine I had some wonky looking invisible zippers that were very visible. This foot makes life much easier – I promise!
Overall super cute skirt that is very feminine. The pattern is very easy and fairly quick, could sew it up in a weekend or less… depending on how distracted you get by the TV. The only thing I find difficult is knowing that shirt to wear with it… obviously. I like the short tummy shirt the best but it needs to be navy blue. I think I’ll have to sew one up soon!
BONUS: POCKETS!!!
Love, Love, Love It!
Thank you!
SO cute!
Thank you 😀
This is gorgeous! I love the fabric, I’m a big fan of Russian dolls too. I have some fabric similar to this but with a black background, and it’s going to be a dress.
Thanks! I can’t wait to see it!!! They are so quirky and fun 😀
hahaha. poor guinness needs a haircut 🙂
Love the skirt and the nesting dolls 🙂 The bow is what really made me love it, great job!
Yep… he’s looking crazy LOL it’s been too cold to cut it but he’s scheduled for Tuesday. And yes, that bow is what makes it great!
That fabric is gorgeous! It looks cute on you
Thanks so much!
Omg!! Love it!!! Great job Amy!
Sooo cute!!
Very cute skirt! Love this fabric.
Nice print choice. It’s really cute Amy.
Thank You!
You made the first skirt with pockets I’ve ever seen 🙂
I like to put pockets in all of my skirts now!
Consider patenting it 😉
I didn’t create the pattern, so I can’t – just sewed it up all pretty 😉
So then you should check whether you can actually sew it 😛
super cute! I like it with the stripey shirt!
Thanks so much! I really like it with the stripey shirt too 🙂
Hi Amy, Thanks for doing this post! I’m looking at this pattern for my new performing outfit, and I really like it because of the tie waist. However, I think it might be a little toooo poofy for my needs. Do you think it would be possibly to just cut the angle a little, do less than a full circle to un-poof it a bit? I’ve never made a circle skirt so I don’t really know how it works. Thanks!!
Yeah you could cut it to where it’s not so full. Also, if you cut on the bias it will hang less poofy. If that makes sense?
