This month’s make is a little different – IT’S A SPECIAL OCCASION GOWN! A couple of months ago Minerva Crafts asked the Blogger Network bloggers about creating a glamourous gown for June’s project. I was super hyped! I’ve always wanted to make something so fancy, but never really had the excuse … until now!
I went with McCall’s 6838. I love mermaid style dress and this reminded me of a Gwen Stefani L.A.M.B. dress that I’m in love with. Shocking – me recreating something gorgeous Gwen wore π
When I started making this my measurements were: 34-29-38. I went with sizes 10-14 and graded along the way. I had a lot of alterations since I was trying to make the L.A.M.B. dress. I had to add 6 inches of length to the skirt, I took the bottom full skirt up 4 inches and added a neck piece.
Since I was making 101 alternations I figured I should make a muslin before cutting into my gorgeous fabric. In total I made 3 muslins – but I think I got the fit down perfectly. The great thing about this pattern is they’ve made all the pieces mix & match so you can create countless garments. For the dress I made I used pieces: 1,2,13,9,10,11,12 and then the additional belt pieces. I did have to recreate my own neck piece – but you won’t see that yet.
That’s the front of the muslin with all of my alterations and without the final full skirt or neck piece. The dress itself will have boning in it and be SUPER form fitting. Getting the perfect fit is key on a gown like this.
Oh – did I forget to mention that I won’t be posting the final garment yet?! This is just a teaser post – the final garment post will come in a couple of weeks! This gown was designed for the Minerva Crafts Meet Up! Sadly I won’t be able to attend since there is a huge ocean between us. But, this doesn’t mean I get to miss out on all the creative fun! So keep an eye out for my finished gown – coming soon π
I lovvvvvve Gwen too! Looking forward to seeing your finished dress!
She’s my favorite and I love her look – I’ve been obsessed since I was 14 haha… can’t help it!
Looks like a great start! I’m excited to see the finished gown π
Thanks! I installed the invisible zipper only to release it gets caught on itself! I forgot to test it before installing it!!! ARGH!!!
As usual, the garments you make are gorgeous — including this one!
thank you π
