I love Sewaholic patterns and when I saw the Saltspring dress it reminded me of those playful dresses I used to wear as a little girl. I bought the pattern many, many months ago but just now got around to making it.
I choose this amazingly comfortable and silky smooth Navy Blue Peacock Feathers Print – Polyester Satin from Minerva Crafts. I was so excited to make this dress as a maternity dress because it looks so flowy and comfortable. I liked that it had tie strings for the future when I breastfeed.
When I started making this my measurements were 37-37-40, so I made a size 10. I did view A and moved the bodice up 3″ and moved the lining up 3″. I added 5″ to the skirt back and 6″ to the front to help cover up the baby bump. I choose not to do the zipper based upon others reviews that it’s really not needed.
I can say that the pattern directions are very easy and great at explaining what to do. If you have any issues there is an awesome sew-along that will answer any questions. With all of that being said, I don’t like my dress that much. It’s not because of the pattern, or instructions, or even the material (which was VERY, VERY slippery) but because it makes me look HUGE! I realized the blousing of the top part just adds too much fluff and isn’t flattering on me. Granted, I am pregnant so dresses tend to look a bit larger, but this just makes me feel like I’m wearing a moo-moo!
On a positive note – the fabric makes the dress feel amazing! It’s so super silky and soft, I highly recommend it. It was hot outside while taking these pictures but since the satin is so light, the breeze just went right through it. Also, since the fabric is so light, I did add lining to the skirt part.
I still want to make this in the future but maybe with a knit and take in the sides a bit. The top part has a lining to it and it helps create the blousing effect. I would do away with that so it’s a bit more fitted. I feel like clothes need to flatter my body, not hide it.
Overall – great pattern if you like dresses of this type. Have you made one of these? What was your opinion?
These photos will be a wonderful reminder of your pregnancy in the future. What a lovely dress.
Thanks! I am trying to have some progressive bump pictures, just to look back on 🙂
Cute ! I love the dress, you may feel like you look big but you really look beautiful in it! I bet that fabric feels amazing too. I love that Guinness is sniffing the fence lol. He’s going to love another member of his pack 😉

You dress is beautiful. Still, you are more beautiful than the dress. Pregnancy seems to agree with you.
