Patterns For Pirates – Wiggle Dress

Patterns For Pirates – Wiggle Dress

I actually made the black version of this dress a few months ago but figured blogging about a plain black dress may not be that exciting, so I whipped up another real quick, just so all of you can see the details a bit better.

This is the Wiggle Dress from Patterns For Pirates*. I also like to call this dress The Knockoff LuLaRoe Julia dress – YAY! Don’t get me wrong, LuLaRoe has some cute stuff and I own about 10 pieces but they are overpriced and half the time ill-fitting. Their leggings don’t fit me worth a damn, I’m in between the sizes and don’t get me started on the inconsistency in their sizes.

Anyways, this isn’t a LuLaRoe bash fest. This pattern comes with so many options it gets overwhelming. You can make a long mermaid dress, a short short dress, a two-piece crop top with pencil skirt, off the shoulders, full sleeve, etc. It’s really exhausting to list it out – basically what I’m saying is that this pattern is worth the price tag of $9 all day long! Such a bargain.

For both of the dresses I made a size M bust graded to L waist and hips. Looking now I maybe should have added 1″ in the length. My measurements are 36-31-40 to give you an idea of sizing. I think the fit is perfect and I really do love it.

So onto the obvious about dresses like this. If you’re not a size 00 they make you look pregnant. I know I’ve been asked if I’m pregnant when I wore the Julia LuLaRoe dress, “No Mom, I’m not pregnant, we just gorged our faces with Outback Steakhouse and I have no self-control over how much of their bread I eat”.

But there is a secret to making the dress flatten your mid-section more than it usually would (and I’m not talking Spanx). Scuba or Ponte! The black dress is made from a ponte I picked up at JoAnns and it’s from my stash. The white with black stripes is some weird content that I don’t even know. It’s kind of like a ponte and scuba had a baby. It has a little bit of stretch and is very thick and smooth. I picked it up from when Hancock Fabrics went out of business a few years ago – so another stashbuster!

I like that this pattern has a back center seam. It hugs your curves well and is very flattering. Also, so much easier on fabric consumption. I think in total I used 1 1/2 yards. Looking over the pictures I should have made a swayback adjustment on the back. Oh well, next time!

Lastly, this sews up incredibly fast. You can buy, print, tape, cut and sew all in under 3 hours and that is being generous. So overall, highly recommend and I love this dress! The black version goes with everything and is very sexy!

  1. You posted this just in time as I have a Wiggle Dress cut and ready to be sewn! I’m making the mermaid version to wear for my friends’ wedding and I feel better now knowing my M to L sizing is spot on since we have basically the same measurements (but I have an added 2″ in the booty!). You are right about the pattern being perfect for squeezing out in minimal yardage as I still have enough left to make a dress like yours.

These are really flattering on you and I love how you styled them – those boots! That vest! And I’ve been meaning to comment about your hair but I’ll do it now – I am LOVING those bangs! OK gush-fest over. Great job! 😀

    1. Oh perfect! I didn’t realize our measurements were so close, that’s awesome! And you’ll love the pattern 🙂 Oddly, the boots are from ShoeDazzle LOL I signed up for them for Gwen Stefani stuff and then got trapped in their scam!!! And thanks so much about the bangs 🙂 🙂 🙂

      1. I just finished the dress for my friend’s wedding and it came out perfect! I am ready to knock out a few more of these in the above-the-knee style because it’s such a quick and easy sew. P4P Wiggle Dress forever!!! 😀

        1. Isn’t it amazing?! I’m obsessed with the pattern <3 I can't wait to see yours!!
