Peek-a-boo Patterns: Classic Oxford & Yukon Button-Up (The Jaws Shirts)

Hey hey! I’m back with something fun! Andres asked me to make him and Nico matching button-up shirts and I agreed. We were already at JoAnn so I told him to pick out fabric. His choice? Jaws. I was a little concerned that maybe that might be traumatizing for a toddler but he assured me Nico would be fine. I just tell Nico it has fishies all over it.

Both of these patterns are from Peek-a-boo Patterns. Andres’s shirt is the Yukon Button-Up and Nico’s is the Classic Oxford Button-Up. I love that she has matching patterns <3

Andres’s measurements were: chest 42 3/4″, neck 16 3/4″ and shoulder width 18″. I went with a size Large. I made a quick muslin since this is the first thing I’ve ever made him and I wanted it to fit him correctly. I think it came out great, the fit looks awesome. The only alteration I made was adding 1/2″ in the length. I also omitted the pocket as he says he doesn’t like pockets on button-ups.

The only complaint he has about the shirt is that it’s so thick. I used quilting cotton because they always have the best prints. Next time I could order a nice shirting cotton, lawn or poplin with a fun print online.

Nico’s measurements were chest: 20 1/2″, length: ~10″ and shoulder width: 8″. I made him a size 2T. I love that this only took 3/4 yard to make!

Both shirts are basically the same construction. Both shirts have lots of topstitching, which makes them look top quality. I was intimidated about making a button-up shirt because there are so many steps, but the directions are great and it’s really not that difficult. I’d just recommend you have an automatic buttonholer on your machine!

A part that I needed help with was the sleeves. I’m not great at setting sleeves in general, so this might just be a me problem. I asked for help in the Facebook Group and everyone was super helpful and nice. I love the community tied to this pattern company! When you sew this, just baste stitch the sleeves around the top, gather a bit and then set the sleeves it – BAM! That easy!

The collar can also be confusing, but if you just go slow and read the directions carefully you will be just fine. I know a lot of people have issues with collars so I assumed I would but overall it wasn’t difficult.

I already have plans to make Nico more of these in fun prints. I figured for the winter I could either do long sleeve or just put a long sleeved shirt/onesie underneath and we are good to go!

BONUS: Picture of them at dinner in Jamaica <3

Overall, I highly recommend both of these patterns and plan to make more 🙂 Also, you may have noticed that my pictures are A LOT better than normal – that’s because my friend Bobby came over and helped me! Thanks so much 🙂 I’m borrowing his lights and stand so hopefully I can figure things out on my own and continue with good pictures.

  1. Can you come and make me fun clothes, please? Thanks! I LOVE jaws, and love these.

  2. I love these shirts! You are the second person I’ve seen use this material for a fun men’s casual shirt, LOL! I think it’s so sweet that your boys have their own matching shirts; they look like they had a great time posing for pics together in their “fishies” gear. =)

JAWS is one of my top 5 favorite movies and I got some of this fabric to make a novelty shirt for myself. Looks like I will be in good company!

    1. You really should! They both really like their shirts and I love that it’s something rare 😀
