Sometimes you really like the idea of something but it is just not for you. I have no idea why I LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea of jumpsuits because I do NOT have the correct body shape for them. I can’t remember the last time I saw a pear-shaped woman look awesome in a jumpsuit? Please prove me wrong in the comments. Anyways, this one I’m marking as a fail. I’m not happy with the garment, style, the pictures or my bored-looking modeling. I think it’s good to post your sewing failures because, honestly, I’m not awesome at this all the time – just sometimes, haha! Man I had high hopes for this. That being said, I still like it but hate it. Here ya go, the Tilly And The Buttons Marigold Jumpsuit.
I don’t even know where to start. I made this back in July and have just now gotten around to posting it because I’m just not all gung-ho about it. First off I had issues with printing this pattern. It was probably a user error but I’ve never had issues with other PDFs – so this should have been a red flag. At the time my measurements were: 36-31-40. The outfit on the model looked a bit too big so I decided to size down and went with a size 3 (34-28-37). The fabric I used was from JoAnn and somewhere in the silky prints section but it’s a rare one because it has a bit of stretch to it. They fabric was super slippery but it’s honestly dreamy and I love it.
One great thing about this pattern? POCKETS. I’m a sucker for pockets! I made a lot of alterations to the pattern: added 1″ to the straps an even added elastic so it would stay better. I shortened the bodice by 1″ but as you can see by the darts, they are still way too high and are above the apex of my chest. I’m sure the elastic had something to do with this. I really can’t remember why I thought adding elastic was a smart idea. I added 3″ to the length of the pants and removed 1″ from the top of the pants, they were giving me diaper crotch.
I thought maybe wearing a short black wig and modeling my awesome L.A.M.B. bag and shoes would help this – but I don’t really think so. I’m not sure if I will wear this out, I guess I could throw a cardigan over the top?
So overall I wouldn’t say this is a pattern issue, it’s just a not-my-style sort of situation. This pattern comes with the pants version also but I like tight fitting pants, so I doubt I’ll make that. This was my first Tilly pattern but it won’t be my last – I’m going to try the Coco Dress eventually. The funniest thing about all of this?! I STILL want to make a jumpsuit! It’s like I just can’t learn my lesson and think that I’ll eventually, magically, somehow find an amazing jumpsuit that looks great on me. Who knows, maybe one day!
What about you? What have you made that you had high hopes for and it ended up being a disappointment? I know this isn’t the worst thing I’ve made but I guess I just thought it would be game-changing. Have you made this pattern? Do you share your failed garments or like to keep them secret and pretend they never happened? Share your thoughts in the comments – I love comments!
If you lengthened the straps to drop the darts to where they should hit, would it just be way too low in front? Just thinking of ways to salvage it, since I think it looks pretty cute!!
I think that would help it A TON. I don’t know if it would be too low, I may have to try this and see how it goes. I’m still kinda mad at it, so it’s sitting aside for now. Thanks for the help!
I love it…looks great on you and the wig is perfect…high heels and purse also great…you look good in anything and I am not just saying that because I am your mom…lol. Love u love the red lipstick
Thank you Mom! I think the bag and shoes helped a little!
I actually don’t think it is terrible. I think the bust is too high and lowering the neckline would help a ton. You could always add ruffle or something if that is too low. The overall fit is grear. I think if the waist were cinched in more, it would be more balanced.
I’m really thinking dropping the neckline would help. I also am just not sure about sweetheart necklines I guess… I’m not sure they are flattering for me. I like them in knits and when they are super tight but on the fence about this one.
I love the wig you look great. I think the bottom half of your outfit looks good but the top looks wrong. If you like the pants maeby you could salvage them by cutting off the top.
Thank you 🙂 I could always slap a cardigan or blazer over the top half so you can’t see it as much!
I would say this this is most definitely a pattern issue as you have a cracking figure! Why does this have such a thick strange elastic at the waist? Who could pull that off? Why are the bust darts so high? The neckline could be lowered also. Odd.
I think if you were to remake this you would have to make a few pattern adjustments and make a toile. Please don’t give up on jumpsuits, given the right pattern you could give us all a masterclass on how to rock this look.
Thank you 🙂 The elastic is kinda thick, you’re right… seems a bit unflattering to me. I kinda made a toile but gave up halfway through. I was trying to meet the Marigold showcase deadline, which I obviously missed anyways LOL
I think you could wear a plastic bag and make it look good! Just saying!
I like you!! Thanks 🙂
